William M. Webster

William M. Webster IV is an American entrepreneur,[1] philanthropist[2] and author[3][4][5] living in South Carolina.[6]

Early Life and Education

Webster was born and raised in Greenville, SC. He attended Washington and Lee University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree summa cum laude. He then attended the University of Virginia School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor.[7]

Professional Career

Webster was a co-founder of Advance America Cash.[8][3]  

Webster was a founding investor in the Greenville Triumph, a USL League One soccer club.[9][10][11][12][13]

In 1991, Webster was selected to be a White House Fellow during the administration of President George H.W. Bush.[6] He served at the Agency for International Development. Webster then became the chief of staff for Presidential Personnel during the Clinton Presidential Transition.[14]

He was appointed as Chief of Staff to Secretary of Education Richard Riley.[15]

In 1994, Webster moved to the White House, where he served as Assistant to the President and Director of Scheduling and Advance for Bill Clinton.[16][17]

As a philanthropist

Webster is active in charitable organizations with an emphasis on education, health care, veterans' issues and conservation.[19]

He chaired the board of Converse College in Spartanburg and served on the board of trustees of Washington and Lee University.[20]

Webster was chairman of the Greenville Hospital System and subsequently chairman of the board of Prisma Health.[21]

He has been a fierce supporter and volunteer for organizations dedicated to finding a cure for treating cancer. Webster currently serves on the board of visitors of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX.[22]

Webster was a founding director of the Upstate Warrior Solution.[23]

He chairs the board of the Nature Conservancy of South Carolina.[24]

Personal Life

Webster is married to Teresa Gantt[25] and the couple have six children.[26]  

Webster is a competitive athlete and has completed more than 120 marathons and ultramarathons. He is also a graduate of the National Outdoor Leadership School. Webster is currently an adjunct professor at Wofford College, where he teaches Health Care Policy.[27]
