Niranjan Hansda is an Indian writer of Santali literature and a civil servant from West Bengal. He is best known for his short story collection Mane Rena Arhang, for which he received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 2021, one of India's highest literary honours.[1][2]

Early life and education

Hansda was born in Jhargram district of West Bengal. He completed his early education in his hometown and later moved to Midnapore for higher studies.[3]

Career

Hansda initially wrote in the Bengali language. Following the inclusion of the Santali language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and growing literary recognition of Santali, he began writing primarily in Santali.[1]

He has served as an officer in the Government of West Bengal. He also served as President of the All India Santali Writers' Association (AISWA), contributing to the promotion and development of Santali literature.

Hansda's writings reflect the social, cultural, and contemporary realities of the Santal people.
