Nanjichang Night Market (Chinese: 南機場夜市) located in Zhongzheng District, Taipei, Taiwan. It is named after Taipei South Airport, which was rebuilt to a public housing and has developed into a small but popular night market.

History

Before the establishment of Taipei Songshan Airport in 1936 under Japanese rule, planes arriving in Taipei would stop at a field near Machangding, located south of the current Songshan Airport, thus the name "Taipei South Airport". After the Nationalist government took over Taiwan, the government built public housing for military personnel and their family members. The place has become popular, and people without proper skills set up stalls here to maintain their livelihood. More and more stalls were established at the time, and finally became a popular night market currently known as "Nanjichang Night Market".[1][2]

Stalls are available at any time, despite the name "Night Market". Most customers are residents, while most stalls are food vendors.[3][2] The market has gained media attention in the 2010s, such as a Bah-oân stall reported by CNN[4][5] as well as Shaobing, Stinky tofu, Mayouji listed by Michelin Guide.[6][7][8]
