Haralal Murmu is an Indian **Santali writer, poet and children's literature author**. He received the Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar in 2025 for his Santali poetry collection Sona Miru-ag Sandesh, a work written for young readers.[1][2]
Early life and education
Haralal Murmu was born on **15 January 1981** in Bandwan in the Purulia district of **West Bengal, India**. His ancestral home is in **Fuljhor village under Bada Bazar area of Purulia district**. His father is Kaleshwar Murmu and his mother is Sabitri Murmu.[3]
He completed his **Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Vivekananda College in 2003** and later obtained a **Master’s degree in English from Netaji Subhas Open University**. Murmu currently works as an **assistant teacher at Keshipur High School** in West Bengal.[3]
Literary career
Murmu began writing literary works while studying in **Class VI**. Over the years, he has contributed to Santali literature through poetry, short stories and children’s literature.

He also publishes a **semi-annual children’s literary and cultural magazine titled Kulhi Dhuri**, aimed at promoting Santali language and literature among young readers.[3]
Awards and recognition
- Sahitya Akademi Bal Sahitya Puraskar (2025) – awarded for the Santali poetry collection Sona Miru-ag Sandesh.[1][2]
The **Bal Sahitya Puraskar**, instituted in 2010 by the Sahitya Akademi, recognizes outstanding contributions to children’s literature in Indian languages.
Murmu has also received several literary honours from regional literary and cultural organisations for his contribution to Santali literature.[3]
